POBNEWS24, Dhaka Jan 17, 2024 : US Ambassador Peter Haas said that Washington will work closely with the new government of Bangladesh on trade, climate change and Rohingya issues in the coming days. On Wednesday (January 17), the newly appointed Foreign Minister Dr. I look forward to working closely (with Bangladesh) to advance our mutual interests in the coming months, he told reporters after Peter Haas’s first meeting with Hasan Mahmood.
The ambassador said that he had an introductory meeting with the new minister on how the United States and Bangladesh will work together in the future. We talked about the future of Bangladesh-US relations and how we can work together on issues of mutual importance – such as expanding business opportunities and the Rohingya issue, he said.
It should be noted that Awami League has formed the government for the fourth time in a row by winning 223 seats in the elections held on January 7. Although some foreign observers expressed satisfaction with the election, the United States and the United Kingdom declared that the vote was not fair.
The United States is concerned about the arrest of thousands of members of opposition political parties in Bangladesh and reports of election irregularities, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement after the vote. The United States agrees with other observers that these elections were not free or fair, and we are disappointed that all parties did not participate.
Earlier, the United States had announced visa bans against people responsible for obstructing the democratic election process in Bangladesh.
