POBNEWS24, Desk report Dhaka May 29, 2024 : An international workshop on “Building Climate Resilience in Aquaculture and Fisheries: An ASEAN-Bangladesh Initiative” and a training on “Regional Knowledge Exchange to Apply Ecosystem Approaches in Managing Inland Fisheries: An ASEAN-Bangladesh Training Initiative” conclude today ( May 29 Wednesday) in Jakarta with the commitment to share knowledge and best practices among the ASEAN countries and Bangladesh.
The Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Mr. Sayeed Mahmood Belal Haider was the Chief guest of the certificate awarding ceremony, while the H.E. Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community and H.E. Mr. Md. Tarikul Islam, Bangladesh Ambassador in Jakarta were present as special guests. The welcome remarks was delivered by Mr, Md. Rais Hasan Sarower, Director General of Regional Organizations Wing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, the certificate awarding ceremony was attended by Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Additional Foreign Secretary (Bilateral-East and West) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Md Tofazzel Hossain, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and Mr. Syed Md. Alamgir, Director General, Department of Fisheries. The workshop participant Mr. Alza Rendian from Indonesian and trainee from Brunei Darusslam, Mr. Pengiran Ajmal Faiz Pengiran Haji Kamaludin shared their experience on behalf of the ASEAN participants.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the ASEAN Secretariat where fisheries experts from nine ASEAN countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, ASEAN Secretariat and official from Bangladesh shared their knowledge and expertise. Besides the thematic sessions, participants also had the opportunity to visit Institut Pertanian Bogor University.
Earlier, the workshop and training were inaugurated by the Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Mr. Sayeed Mahmood Belal Haider on 27 May 2024 at ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta attended by among other, H.E. Dato’ Astanah Abdul Aziz, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political Security Community, H.E. Mr. Md. Tarikul Islam, Bangladesh Ambassador in Jakarta, High Officials of Bangladesh Government, Representatives from Permanent Missions of Member States to ASEAN and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia as well as researchers and academician from nine ASEAN countries and Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh has recently taken number of initiatives to enhance its relationship with the ASEAN to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN. In this endeavors, Bangladesh Government funded “ASEAN-Bangladesh Cooperation Project on Fisheries and Aquaculture”, the first ever project between ASEAN and Bangladesh has been implemented with the conclusion of these workshop and training in Jakarta. Under that project, an international workshop on sustainable aquaculture was earlier organized in Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar on March this year.
