POBNEWS24, Ukhiya, Cox s Bazar, June 1, 2024 : Rohingya camp No. 13 of Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar caught fire again. About two hundred houses have been destroyed. Several people were injured. Their names were not immediately available.
The incident of fire happened in D-1, D-2 and D-3 blocks of Tajnimarkhola No. 13 Rohingya camp around 1 pm on Saturday.
It has been seen on the ground, apart from the huts of the Rohingya camp, four houses of the locals have been burnt. Upon receiving this news, the local UP member of Ward No. 4 Michbah Uddin Salim visited the scene. Currently, Rohingya and local victims are living inhumane conditions under the open sky.
Earlier, 9 units of fire service came to the spot after receiving information about the fire. They managed to bring the fire under control after trying for about an hour and a half. Members of APBN, BGB, police and army were also seen working to control the fire along with the fire service.
Majhi Bashir of D-1 Block said that we do not know the origin of the fire. All the houses in my block were burnt to ashes. Information about the injured is not known.
Zahid Hossain, the master of D-2 Block, said, “We could not understand how the fire started suddenly.” We managed to get some things out of the house.
Initially, a source said, the fire started when Abdullah’s wife of D-1 block was cooking. The fire later spread to the entire block.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station Shamim Hossain confirmed the truth of the fire and said that after receiving the information, the policemen cooperated in maintaining law and order as well as controlling the situation.
Atish Chakma, Deputy Assistant Director of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service, said that the fire was brought under control after an hour and a half of efforts. Nine units of Ramu and Ukhia Fire Services worked in it.
Ukhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanvir Hossain said that after looking into the burnt houses of the locals, compensation will be arranged by the government.
Incidentally, on May 24, a fire broke out in the same camp and at least 300 houses were burnt. Many Rohingya families are still living in misery.
