Drama is everything
I’m Kate Winslet. I was born in Redding, Berkshire. We are three sisters, one brother. Mother was a great cook. Another of his qualities was that he could tell wonderful stories. Dad was a postman, a van driver, a Christmas tree seller, he did a lot of weird things. And yes, he was also an actor. The acting didn’t add anything to his pocket, yet he loved the job. My inclination towards this art is probably derived from him. In school, I didn’t like math, English, history … anything. I like drama. All the emotion was around the drama.
If you get something
I have never found such a good character in a school play. I have happily acted as a parir, a crocodile and even a crow. Whether the character is small or big, I have always tried to give my best. Dad used to say, if you want to get something, you have to give something. So keep working. I tried my best. Got results too. I got ‘A’ in the only drama class in school. Yes, this was the only ‘A’ grade in my school life.
From the sandwich shop
Honestly, I didn’t have the courage to act in movies. So how did I cross such a long way? Guys.
I started working in a sandwich shop with my mother when I was in school. So wherever I got the news of an ‘audition’, there was a way to earn a living. But unfortunately I was just auditioning, there was no job opportunity for any character. I always compared myself to others. Everyone at school used to call me ‘Votku’. He used to laugh and annoy me because I wanted to act. I remember once I was locked in a school cupboard and everyone was laughing. I was not beautiful. I have also heard that ‘you are lucky to have the opportunity to play the role of fat girls’. And there’s a sentence over and over again, ‘It’s not what you’re looking for, Kate.’
I’m ready
I ignored the bad comments of the people. Believe in yourself. I had to think beyond all this, I had to work hard. To get the thing of love is to be stubborn. Believe me, I deserve it. Sometimes this is the hardest thing to believe.
One day I appeared in an audition. The hair is not good, the legs are too big, the body shape does not match … One by one the girls were left out in the audition due to these arguments. I stood at the very back of the line. But when I stood in front of the selectors, all my attention was focused. They said, ‘Kate, are you ready?’ And I said, ‘You’re ready to accept me!’
