POBNEWS24, Dhaka, June 21, 2021: A total of 309 people were detained in Malaysia on Monday morning in a crackdown on illegal immigrants. 102 of them are Bangladeshis. As many as 164 Bangladeshis were detained in Malaysia in two phases this month.
Malaysia’s state news agency Barnama was quoted as saying by the country’s English daily The Star.
In the morning, officials from the Malaysian Immigration Department raided a residential area inhabited by migrants near an under-construction infrastructure in the town of Dengkil in Selangor province. During the operation, 715 people were interrogated by the law enforcement agencies. Of these, 309 were detained for not having the necessary documents to stay in Malaysia legally. Among them, 102 Bangladeshis, 193 Indonesians, 8 Myanmar nationals and 4 Vietnamese nationals have been detained. The identities of the other two were not known.
Foreign Ministry officials told UNI that the Bangladesh Mission in Kuala Lumpur had informed Dhaka about the detention of Bangladeshis. And the detention is part of a regular crackdown on illegal immigrants.
