POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Apr 14, 2026 : Poyala Baishakh is a special day to unveil Bengali culture and national identity. Like the past six decades, on this day, the people of the country look back on the year that has passed, wiping away all the sorrows and worries. Last year too, the New Year celebrations were held smoothly in Ramna. On December 16, the Victory Day celebrations were held on the open stage. Two days later, late at night, the Chhayanaut Cultural House was torn apart with broken harmoniums, tabla, and tanpuras, and the sad memory of children’s books from Nalanda. That night, two top newspaper buildings were set on fire. The next day, Udichi was attacked. Baul artists were humiliated a few days before these violent events. The terrible incident of 2001 awakened in this village. The body of the deceased Nural Pagal, who died in Goalanda, was taken out of the grave and burned down along with his house by the enthusiastic Tawheed crowd, with joy and madness….The people of this country are the witnesses of all this. Dr. Sarwar Ali, the president of Chayanaut, told this reporter these words in a very sad tone.
Sarwar Ali said that the music that accompanies the joy-pain-union-separation-crisis of Bengalis, the basis for achieving all rights since the liberation war, binds people of all religions and ethnicities in the bond of harmony, and some evil force wants to deter peace-loving people from that music by threatening them. They are trying to uproot the existing Bengali song from its rich heritage. Intolerance has increased in society. The fear of group persecution for expressing one’s opinion has increased.
The president of Chayanaut mentioned that Persian civilization is also facing a terrible disaster today due to American-Israeli persecution. He said, ‘Today, the world is upset and terrified. Today, on the first morning of the new year, everyone in our country wishes for world peace. I want to hear the message of the society, so that journalists can express their true opinions without fear, so that everyone can sing without fear, so that all expressions of culture are unhindered and Bengalis live a fear-free life.’
Sarwar Ali said, ‘I dream of such a motherland, “Where the mind is fearless, where the head is high and knowledge is free, the walls of the house are free.’
Like other years, this morning too, this morning The crowd continued to grow, the presence of people continued to increase. At one point, the Batamul premises were filled to the brim with people. Beyond Batamul, the crowd of people also increased in other places in Ramna Park. Everyone continued to enjoy this arrangement of welcoming the Bengali New Year as if enchanted.
Although the crowd at Batamul in Ramna continued to increase, the main arrangement of welcoming the Bengali New Year, the Chhayanaut ceremony, ended immediately. The elation of life awakened in the hearts of Bengalis at all district, upazila and union levels of the country. People from different countries of the world enjoyed the New Year’s reception in Dhaka.
It is worth noting that after 2024, that elation no longer appeared in the minds of the people of Bangladesh in that way. Those days of welcoming the New Year of Fine Arts and Dhaka University are still indelible in the pages of memory.
