POBNEWS24, Mymensingh Apr 21, 2026 : A court in Tarakanda Upazila of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, has sentenced seven people to death in the murder case of college student Shahinur Alam alias Iqbal. Judge Mohammad Zakir Hossain of the Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge’s Court announced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. The plaintiff’s lawyer Rafiqul Islam confirmed the verdict.
The defendants sentenced to death are Asif Rana, Mohammad Ali, Golam Hossain, Abdul Helim, Farid Ahmed, Yunus Ali and Shamsul Haque of Palashkanda village in Kamaria union of the upazila. In addition, Khaleda Akhter and Rehena Khatun have been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Tk 25,000 each in this case, with one year of rigorous imprisonment in default.
It is learned that Iqbal, a student from Mymensingh, went missing from Palashkanda village in Tarakanda after 11 pm on May 31, 2021. At that time, his elder brother Engineer Md. Selim Mia filed a case against unknown persons at Tarakanda Police Station. On June 5, the police recovered Iqbal’s body from a septic tank next to the house. In this case, the accused Abdul Helim and Khaleda Akhtar gave statements under Section 164 in the court. The names of seven more people emerged in their confessions.
Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, the plaintiff in the case, Engineer Selim Mia, said that such a verdict has been reached due to the selfless cooperation of the police and lawyers. He demanded that the verdict be implemented quickly.
