POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Nov 19, 2021 : Legal notices have been sent to five people, including Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meter, a commercial organization, to take necessary steps to prevent and control the misuse of social media Facebook in Bangladesh.
The other four who have been sent notices are the BTRC chairman, the postal and telecommunications secretary, the senior secretary at the home ministry’s public security department and the director general of the digital security agency.
Supreme Court lawyer Tapash Kanti Bal on Thursday sent the notice to four people, including SM Masum Billah, a law teacher at Jagannath University, and lawyer George Chowdhury through registry and e-mail.
Within three days of receiving the notice, the country has been asked to take necessary steps to control the misuse of social media Facebook and Facebook activities without any delay. Failure to do so will result in legal redressal of grievances, the notice said.
Lawyer Tapas Kanti Bal told Prothom Alo, “It was claimed in a Facebook post on October 13 that the Quran was kept in a puja mandapa in Comilla during Durga Puja. Videos and pictures of the Qur’an being kept in the mandapa have spread widely on social media, especially on Facebook. Such misleading information and rumors go viral on Facebook. In this, other issues including hate speech are introduced. Those who have been sent notices have failed to prevent and control them.
