POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Nov 20, 2021 : Bangladesh has so far not agreed to a proposal to buy warships for the navy from the United Kingdom, said Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.
He said this when asked about the purchase of a ship from the United Kingdom on Sunday. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 21st Ministerial Conference of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to be held in the capital from Monday.
After 9 days, the Foreign Minister spoke in a very different tone about the purchase of warships for the Navy from the United Kingdom. He made the remarks during the Prime Minister’s visit to the United Kingdom.
On November 5, the Foreign Minister said, ‘The United Kingdom wants to send some naval force ships to Bangladesh. The final decision will be made later. We agree in principle that we will take five. Three of these stars will make, two we will. They will work to develop our shipbuilding dock.
Asked about the same today, Abdul Momen said, “The United Kingdom offered to buy five warships. Two will be made in our country and the rest will be made in their country. Second, they will also improve our dockyard. We said we would look into the matter. Not yet agreed. I have said that I will look into other proposals later.
A diplomatic source told this correspondent that Italy has already offered to sell five warships to Bangladesh.
