POBNEWS24,Dhaka, Jan 17 , 2022: The Cabinet has finally approved the draft law for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other commissioners.
The draft law calls for the appointment of a CEC and a commissioner through a search committee.
A cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Monday approved the draft ‘Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner Appointment Act, 2022’.
Later, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters the decision of the cabinet meeting at a press conference at the Secretariat.
The cabinet secretary said an inquiry committee would be formed to appoint the CEC and the commissioner. The six-member inquiry committee will be headed by a judge of the Appellate Division nominated by the Chief Justice.
In addition, a member of the High Court, the Auditor General, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission and two eminent persons nominated by the President will be members.
The Cabinet Division will provide secretarial assistance to the committee. The committee will propose the names of eligible persons. From there the president will appoint.
Some conditions have been given in the proposed law for the appointment of these posts. Those people must be at least 50 years old. In addition, those people must have at least 20 years of working experience in government, semi-government, private or judicial positions.
A journalist asked whether the upcoming parliamentary elections would be held under this law.
In response, the cabinet secretary said, “Hopefully, this law will not take long to be finalized.”
The President has been holding a dialogue with the registered political parties since December 20 on the reorganization of the Election Commission. Abdul Hamid.
The ruling party Awami League has a dialogue with the President today. A 10-member delegation led by Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will take part in the dialogue at Bangabhaban at 4 pm today.
The 23 parties participating in the dialogue with the President so far are Jatiya Party (JPA), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP), Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, Workers Party of Bangladesh, Islamic Unity, Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF). ), Bikalpadhara, Gana Forum, Samyabadi Dal, Ganatantri Party, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan, Jamiat Ulamaye Islam, Gana Front, Krishak Sramik Janata League, Jatiya Party (JP), Islamic Front Bangladesh, Bangladesh NAP, Kalyan Party, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), Zack’s party and NPP.
The BNP, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh, the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (BSD), the LDP, the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), the Revolutionary Workers Party and the Bangladesh Muslim League did not participate in the President’s dialogue.
