POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Jan 30, 2022 : The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Appointment Bill 2022 passed in the 16th session of the Eleventh National Assembly has kindly agreed to the President. Last Thursday, Law Minister Anisul Haque introduced the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Appointment Bill 2022 in the National Assembly. 10 MPs from BNP, Jatiya Party and Gana Forum took part in the policy-making discussion by proposing to send the bill to the Public Opinion Verification and Selection Committee. A total of 12 MPs from BNP, Jatiya Party, Workers Party, Jasad and independents took part in the discussion by amending the bill. In general, MPs from the Workers Party and the Jats are not seen proposing amendments to the bill.
Although several amendments were accepted, no major changes were made. Significantly, a provision has been added in the inquiry committee that one of the two prominent citizens nominated by the President will be a woman. Besides, the inquiry committee has been asked to propose names within 15 working days. It was 10 days ago.
The title of the bill has been changed. With the adoption of the amendment proposal in Parliament, the name will now be ‘Appointment Bill for Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners’.
