On the other hand, considering less important, 1,040 seats have been reduced in Dhaka University in the coming academic year.
A few days ago, the results of HSC and equivalent examinations of 2021 were published. It has been seen that the number of students getting GPA 5 has increased a lot. Whose first choice is Dhaka University. However, in addition to the reduction of seats in the next 2021-22 academic year, there will be no ‘D’ unit from the 2022-23 academic year. On the one hand, the number of students doing well has increased and on the other hand, the number of seats in the first choice institution has decreased.
Educationists say that if the quality cannot be ensured by reducing the number of seats, it will be a futile attempt. However, it is very logical to reduce the seats in some subjects of Dhaka University. At the same time, they have to take initiative to open new issues in line with the work market and increase the number of seats on demand.
When asked, educationist Professor Syed Manjurul Islam told Kaler Kanth, ‘I think it is logical that the seats have been reduced. Those who are admitted in many subjects like dance, Persian, Urdu, Arabic, they do not know those subjects well even after finishing their studies. Many classrooms do not have seating for more than 40 people. Teachers do not know students. So how will he teach? Again, if there are as many students as there are seats, there is no need to crowd the public room. ‘
Manjurul Islam, a former teacher at Dhaka University, said, “There are many students in the humanities at Dhaka University, but not in science. New topics like microbiology, virology have to be opened. Now the issues that are in line with the times have to be opened and the seats have to be increased. ‘
According to sources, one of the most sought after subjects in Dhaka University is the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. But as per the recommendation of the Deans Committee, the number of seats in these sections has remained unchanged. Seats in the departments of Biochemistry and Biology, Microbiology and Fisheries of the Faculty of Biology remain unchanged. Deans want to keep the seats in the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics departments of the Faculty of Science unchanged.

Seats remain unchanged in the anthropology, print and publishing, and television, film, and photography departments. Seats in the Geology Department of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences also remain unchanged. Seats in the graphic design, printmaking, oriental art, pottery, sculpture, crafts and history of the Faculty of Fine Arts remain unchanged. Among the institutes, the number of seats in Statistical Research and Teaching Institute, Institute of Health Economics, Energy Institute, Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies and Institute of Leather Engineering and Technology remained unchanged.
Faculties in which the number of seats is decreasing and increasing: As per the recommendation of Deans Committee, the number of seats in the Faculty of Arts has been reduced from 515 to one thousand 75 to one thousand 360. The number of seats in the business education faculty has been reduced from 200 to 1,250. It has been recommended to reduce the number of seats in the Faculty of Social Sciences from 156 to 1,075. In the Faculty of Biology, 90 has been reduced from 565 to 495.
The number of seats in the Faculty of Science has been increased from 48 to 480. In the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, 10 have been reduced from 245 to 235. The deans recommended increasing the number of seats in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology from 10 to 235 to 245. Five seats in the Faculty of Fine Arts may be reduced from 135 to 130. The law faculty has been reduced from 20 to 110. The number of seats in the Faculty of Pharmacy has been increased from 10 to 65. On the other hand, 40 seats in 10 institutes were reduced from 915 to 75.
Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Professor Saifuddin said the number of seats remained unchanged. Tareq told Kaler Kanth, “We thought from the department that what we have can continue. Because increasing the seats is not the real thing. The capacity of our department is very low. Now the number is more than the capacity. Rather it should be further reduced. Otherwise the capacity of the department should be further enhanced. ‘
Chairperson of the Department of Criminology (Faculty of Social Sciences), Assistant Professor Khandaker Farzana Rahman, who has reduced the number of seats from 10 to 50 to 40, told Kaler Kantha, “The demand for criminology is constantly increasing, it is true. The capacity of our department is also adequate. However, the job market has not expanded beyond that. Even the department’s alumni have not grown in proportion to those who will play a role in expanding the job market according to demand. Maybe that’s why our seats have been reduced. However, the department asked to keep the seats unchanged. ‘
Professor Kazi Shahidullah, chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and former dean of Dhaka University, told Kaler Kanth, “Employment among people is an important issue. There are some things that do not get a job after passing from there. There is no harm in reducing their seats. We from UGC focus on opening issues that are compatible with the job market and increasing the number of seats there and giving more importance to quality education. The Dhaka University authorities may also have specific plans in that regard. ‘
Professor Nazrul Islam, a former teacher at Dhaka University and former chairman of UGC, told Kaler Kanth: But if quality education cannot be ensured by reducing the number of seats, then their initiative will not be successful. However, many more students have passed HSC this year. Again, the seats in Dhaka University are decreasing from next academic year. This can create a psychological problem among the students. These issues should also be kept in mind by the university authorities at this time in Corona. ‘
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor ASM Maqsood Kamal told Kaler Kanth, “We will provide higher education as per the need. In order for students to become proficient in the subject they are going to study, the facilities need to be increased. There are plans to determine the number of students based on the size of the classroom or the ratio of classrooms to students at the international level. To this end, the number of seats in the university is being reduced. ‘
