POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 5, 2022 : The death toll from a fire at a container depot in Chittagong’s Sitakunda has risen to 43. In addition, several hundred more were injured. Numerous more bodies are expected to be found.
Sitakunda Upazila Health Officer Dr Nuruddin Rashed said, ‘I have been providing my services all night on Saturday and till today.
The death toll rose to 43 by noon.
Upazila Executive Officer. Shahadat Hossain said, ‘I am just counting body after body. So far we have found the bodies of 43 people. Most of the identities did not match. We fear that more bodies will be found. ‘
Earlier, an explosion took place at the BM container depot on Saturday night. Container Depot is located at 60 acres of land in Shitalpur area of Sitakunda adjacent to Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
According to police, fire service and local sources, the fire broke out at the container depot located in Kadmarsul area of Sonaichhari around 9 pm. It spread in a short time. Upon receiving the news, Kumira and Sitakunda Fire Service officials went to the spot and started working to control the fire. The fire came under control around 11 pm. Then suddenly there was a loud explosion in a chemical loaded container. The injured have been rescued and taken to different hospitals. The death toll could rise further.
