POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 30, 2022 : The rains and slopes of the upper reaches have again caused new floods in Kurigram. The water of Dharla and Dudhkumar is flowing over the danger zone. As a result, at least 70 char villages and low lying areas of riverside villages of Nageshwari, Fulbari, Kurigram Sadar and Ulipur upazilas have been inundated. Many people have taken refuge on high ground, roads and dams as water rises in their homes.
At least 50,000 people have been stranded.
Jute, maize, seedbed and vegetable fields in these areas have been submerged. People are suffering due to water flowing on rural roads.
According to the Kurigram Water Development Board, the water of Dharla river was flowing at 18 cm above the danger level at 3 pm on Thursday.
Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of the Water Development Board, said the water level in Dharla, Teesta and Dudhkumar has started declining due to declining rainfall. He said more water could be reduced in the next few days.
However, Abdus Sabur, officer-in-charge of Rajarhat Agricultural Meteorological Observatory, said moderate to very heavy rains are forecast in the district till July 2.
Ataur Rahman Mintu of Baravita Union Parishad of Fulbari Upazila said most areas of Mekli, East and West Dhaniram, Baravita and Baralai villages of the union have been flooded. About 15,000 people from 3,000 families have been flooded.
Abdul Baten, chairman of Panchgachhi union of Sadar upazila, said water had flooded almost all the villages in 9 wards including Kadamtala, Shitaijhar, Nawabshah and Gobindpur. 20,000 people have been stranded.
Kurigram Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rasedul Hasan said various preparations have been made including relief and rescue operations due to the new floods. New 60 metric tons of rice has been allocated for waterlogged people. Besides, initiative has been taken to purchase and distribute dry food.
