POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Nov 11, 2022 : The US mid-term elections have practically started the country’s 2024 presidential election journey. And many candidates are waiting to register their name in the competition. Former President Donald Trump is still in an advantageous position in his party’s nomination. He may once again have the same opportunity as he did against President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
But the results of the midterm elections did not go well for Trump. Because some candidates supported by him lost. The result hurt Trump’s chances despite his popularity among the Republican Party.
The former president will be 78 years old at the time of the next election. He is likely to face a challenge from a section of the party aspirants. And among these candidates there are people who were once with him.
Ron DeSantis
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has worked hard to establish himself as a challenger to Trump. He won Tuesday’s election by a margin of more than a million and a half votes.
DeSantis, 44, studied at Harvard and Yale. But he is still relatively new in US politics. Once served in the Navy. He also visited Iraq. He was a lesser-known member of the House of Representatives during 2013-18. However, since becoming the governor in 2019, he is gradually becoming a star. Especially because of his conservative stance. For the first time in his tenure, Republican voters outnumbered Democrats in the state.
He has lifted restrictions on masks and vaccines during the Covid pandemic. He also passed anti-riot laws and supported legislation to limit gay education in schools.
Trump appears to be keeping a close eye on DeSantis. He has even threatened to leak his information if he stands for election in 2024.
Mike Pence
was a very loyal Vice President of Donald Trump until the riots in the US Congress. His father was a Korean War hero. But his career started as a radio presenter. As a member of Congress from 2000 for the next 13 years, he became known as an ideal conservative. He was associated with the Tea Party Movement.
Pence served as governor of Indiana for the next four years beginning in 2013. During that time, he passed the largest tax breaks in state history and signed bills to limit abortion and protect religious freedom.
Pence, 63, will have a distinct advantage because of his faith, as the segment of Christians he represents has a separate voting bloc. They were Trump supporters in the 2016 election.
The calm and composed Pence is seen as an effective proxy for the loud-mouthed Donald Trump. However, Trump blamed Pence’s lack of courage for not agreeing to annul the results of the last election.
Trump supporters stormed Capitol Hill in January last year and called for Pence’s execution. At one point they came within 40 feet of the Vice President. Since then, the distance between the two of them has been created. Pence has endorsed several candidates in this year’s election, including Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. Donald Trump has supported his opponent. But Pence never criticized Trump.
Liz Cheney
The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney was once considered a rising star of the Republican Party. In 2017, he won by standing on his father’s seat. But he lost support within the party for criticizing Donald Trump. He later voted to impeach Trump after the attack on the Congress building.
But he also had to pay for this role. He lost the Wyoming primary against a Donald Trump-backed candidate by a margin of 40 percent. Now he is not associated with the party there.
He is one of two Republicans in Congress to investigate the Capitol Hill attack.
As the vice chairman of the committee, he is working on the allegations against Trump. He still considers himself a Republican and has vowed to do whatever it takes to revive the party.
Mike Pompeo
Congressman Mike Pompeo from Kansas warned in 2016 that Trump could become an authoritarian president. He also said that Trump will ignore the Constitution.
He graduated from the prestigious West Point Military Academy. The Harvard-educated lawyer served as CIA director and was secretary of state in the Trump administration.
Except for Donald Trump’s meeting with North Korean President Kim Jong Un, he has also come out of the old US policy on relations with Israel. But he has also created controversy. Bitterness involved with journalists.
Glenn Youngkin
surprised the Republican Party when he won the governorship in Virginia last year. He defeated a strong Democrat. Democrats have been on the rise recently in his state. He criticized the politics of partition as ‘very bitter’.
The 55-year-old politician came into the limelight the day he took office after lifting Covid restrictions and banning the teaching of critical race theory in schools.
This time he worked in support of party candidates. However, he later apologized after being criticized for commenting on the attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband.
Nikki Haley
was once considered the Republican Party’s brightest star. However, in recent years, his condition has seemed a little dirty.
Born in South Carolina to a Punjabi Sikh immigrant family, Nikki Haley was elected as the youngest governor in 2009. Despite saying that he is not a fan of Trump, he was appointed the permanent representative of the United States to the United Nations by the Trump administration. He made a dramatic exit during a speech by the Palestinian representative to the Security Council. He has also garnered a lot of criticism.
Trump reportedly refused to meet Haley, 50, last year.
Rick Stock
Rick Stock is a lawmaker elected from Florida. This time he worked for the victory of party candidates in the Senate. Worked on fundraising for party candidates across the country. He was the governor of Florida for two terms.
Apart from this, the names of Texas Senator Tread Cruz, former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, former Texas Governor Greg Abbott and South Dakota’s first female Governor Christy Noem are also being heard in the 2024 US presidential election.
