In the last four years, there was a famine of hilsa in this state. However, this time on June 15, the West Bengal government’s two-month ban on catching hilsa in the sea ended. It was learned on the ground that after the end of the ban, fishermen with around two and a half thousand trawlers crossed the sea to catch hilsa. Even if more or less hilsa is caught in the net for a month, the fishermen’s faces smile for three to four days. Since then, flocks of hilsa are being caught in their nets.
Bijan Maiti, secretary of Kakdwip Fishermen’s Development Association, met at the fish market in Entali Market, Kolkata on July 30. He said, now the water flow is flowing from Bangladesh towards India. As a result, flocks of hilsa are coming here. Apart from this, it is raining moderately. As a result, a favorable environment for catching hilsa is now prevailing in West Bengal. However, fishermen are not able to stay in the sea for a long time due to the waves in the sea. If the tide was low, the hilsa would come in flocks.
On Saturday, more than two hundred fishing trawlers returned to Nagendra wholesale market in Nagendra wholesale market with hilsa in Namkhana of South 24 Parganas. The amount of hilsa was two thousand tons. Hilsa size was 500 to 800 grams. Yesterday, this hilsa was sold in the wholesale market at the rate of 530 rupees per kg. Fish weighing 500 to 800 grams was sold at the price of 700 to 900 in the retail market of Antali Market. A lot of hilsa fish market can be seen on the surface.
Basically, in the last four days, a lot of hilsa has been caught in the nets of the fishermen of Kakdwip, Namkhana, Fraserganj, Sagar, Bakkhali, Patharpratima, Diamond Harbor areas of Sundarban area of South 24 Parganas. It is also being sold at Nagendra Wholesale Market in Diamond Harbour. After that it goes to the wholesale markets of Kolkata, Barasat, Patipukur, Howrah.
Kakdwip Fishermen Development Association Secretary Bijan Maiti said that 11,000 fishing trawlers are engaged in catching hilsa in this state. He said, I hope the water flow of Bangladesh will come here in the coming days as well. People of India can eat a lot of hilsa fish.
Syed Anwar Maqsud, General Secretary of Kolkata Fish Importers Association, told this correspondent on Saturday afternoon, “We are very optimistic about Hilsa this time. We think that this time we will be able to cut the drought of hilsa. A lot of hilsa will be caught in our sea.
