POBNEWS24, Dhaka July 6, 2022: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed deep concern over the spate of attacks on teachers in Bangladesh.
Condemning the incidents, the UN organization said that attacking teachers means attacking education. If we fail to protect teachers from violence, children will suffer in the end.
Sheldon Yate, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, expressed concern in a statement sent to the media on Wednesday (July 6).
On June 25, Ashraful Ahsan Jitu, a student of Class ten of Haji Yunus Ali School and College in Ashulia, Savar, hit Utpal Kumar, a college teacher, with a cricket stump.
The teacher succumbed to his injuries one day after the incident.
On the other hand, based on a status on Facebook on June 18, locals put a shoelace on Swapan Kumar Biswas, an acting principal of Mirzapur United College in Narail Sadar Upazila, in front of the local administration.
Various political parties, social, cultural and professional organizations of the country have raised their voices in protest of the incidents.
This time UNICEF joined the protest. Sheldon Yate, UNICEF Representative, said that UNICEF is deeply concerned about the recent spate of attacks on teachers in Bangladesh.
UNICEF condemned the attacks and stood by Bangladesh. In addition, it calls for the safety and security of teachers.
A statement from UNICEF emphasized the need to protect teachers. It is said that such protection is needed for the interest of children.
Sheldon Yate said, teachers play an important role in ensuring children’s right to education. But in order to do this, teachers need to be able to teach students to think constructively to the best of their ability, and to build them into good people without any fear.
UNICEF works in some of the most difficult places in the world to reach the most disadvantaged children in the world. The agency said in a statement that it was working to build a better world for all children in more than 190 countries and territories.
