POBNEWS24, Dhaka Oct 9, 2024 : Bangladesh has called for decisive collective action against nuclear threats while advocating for the peaceful use of nuclear energy for agriculture, healthcare, and power generation.
The call was made by Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin while speaking at the First Committee of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday, according to a message received here today.
In his address, the foreign secretary has reiterated Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to general and complete disarmament, highlighting the necessity of global peace and security.
He underscored the inalienable rights of all states to harness nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, while stressing the importance of preventing its misuse.
He also urged UN Member states to leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) for promoting peace rather than conflict.
Addressing the Second Committee of UNGA79, the foreign secretary emphasized the need for concrete actions to realize the goals of the “Pact of the Future.”
His statement outlined key areas of focus, including comprehensive reform of the global financial system, particularly sovereign debt architecture and stronger climate actions.
Jashim further highlighted the importance of addressing illicit financial flows, economic diversification, and fostering resilience through youth-driven solutions, technological investment, and human capital development.
