POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 16, 2021: The United States has requested Bangladesh to provide temporary accommodation to US citizens and allies in Afghanistan.
However, the Bangladesh government has rejected the country’s request, said Foreign Minister. AK Abdul Momen.
The United States has offered Biman Bangladesh Airlines to evacuate thousands of people, including Afghans working for the US military.
However, Bangladesh has rejected the proposal.
“We cannot comply with the US request to grant asylum to some people from Afghanistan in Bangladesh,” the foreign minister Dr. Abdul Momen told the media on Monday night (August 16th).
According to the planning department of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the United States has offered Biman through a third party to evacuate about 45,000 people from Afghanistan.
Abdul Momen told this correspondent that first the US ambassador in Washington and then the US ambassador in Dhaka requested some Afghan nationals to be given temporary asylum in Bangladesh.
The foreign minister said Bangladesh already has a problem with sheltering 1.1 million Rohingyas.
Bangladesh has no chance to give shelter to the people of any new country.
So we rejected the US proposal.
