POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 15, 2022: Today, August 15, is the National Day of Mourning. Bengali mourning day. On this day in 1975, the people of Bangladesh lost the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a brutal and poignant murder in history.
Heroism, sacrifice, conviction, leadership qualities—as a politician, the nation saw a combination of all these in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which easily established him as the architect of freedom and the father of the nation. Although the assassins killed Bangabandhu, he has a place in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh. Bengalis will remember their great leader on this day of mourning.
On the night of August 15, 1975, some misguided members of the army killed Bangabandhu and his family at his residence number 32 in Dhanmondi. Apart from Bangabandhu, his wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, three sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and infant son Sheikh Russell, daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rozi Jamal, Bangabandhu’s only brother Sheikh Abu Nasser, Colonel Jamiluddin Ahmed who rushed to save his life after receiving Bangabandhu’s call, SB officer Siddiqur Rahman and army officer Syed Mahbubul Haque were killed.
That same night, another group of misguided soldiers attacked the residence of Bangabandhu’s nephew Jubo League leader Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni and killed him and his pregnant wife Arju Moni. Apart from this, Bangabandhu’s sister-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat and his daughter Baby, son Arif Serniabat, grandson Sukant Babu, Serniabat’s elder brother’s son Sajib Serniabat and a relative Abdul Naeem Khan were also killed.
At that time, Bangabandhu’s two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived as they stayed in Brussels, Belgium.
After the assassination of Bangabandhu, the Indemnity Ordinance blocked the way to justice. Even murderers are rewarded with jobs in various embassies outside the country. After long 21 years in 1996, when the Awami League came to power under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the trial of the murderers began. At the same time, August 15 was declared as National Day of Mourning and a public holiday on this day.
On November 8, 1998, the court sentenced 15 people to death in the Bangabandhu murder case. Later the High Court upheld the death sentence of 12 accused. Six convicts have been executed so far. One died abroad. Five absconding.
Various programs have been taken by the government on the occasion of National Mourning Day. Bangladesh Television and Radio, private television channels and daily newspapers have special programs on the occasion of National Mourning Day.

President Md. Abdul Hamid has organized a special doa mahfil at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban today on the occasion of National Mourning Day and 47th Martyrdom Anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Awami League program
Awami League has taken a month-long program since the beginning of August, the month of mourning. At sunrise today, the party program will begin by lowering the national and party flags to half-mast and hoisting the black flag at Bangabandhu Bhavan in Dhanmondi and the central office of Awami League across the country.
At 6:30 in the morning, the central leaders will place wreaths on his portrait in the premises of Bangabandhu Bhavan. Tributes will be paid to those killed on August 15 at Banani Cemetery at 8 am. Tributes, Fateha reading, Milad and Doa Mahfil will be held at Bangabandhu’s mausoleum at Tungipara at 12 noon.
Dua and Milad mahfil have been organized in mosques of the country including the national mosque Baitul Mukarram centrally in Bad Zohar. Apart from this, there will be special prayers in temples, pagodas, churches, places of worship across the country. Food will be distributed among the poor, orphans and distressed by various committees of Awami League and affiliated organizations.
National Mourning Day commemoration meeting will be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center tomorrow Tuesday at 4 pm. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will preside over it.
