POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Jul 8 (UNI) Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), a major political party in Bangladesh, is much stronger now than any time before.
BNP leaders–Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman—are also much stronger than before. The government, led by Awami League, came to power illegally through rigging of votes.
The government is now desperate to stay in power for fear of seeing Kheleda Zia’s love for the country and patriotism. That is why, the ruling party is trying to strengthen its position by filing false cases against BNP leaders and activists.
On the other hand, the people of the country have been deprived of their right to vote. At the moment, there is no democracy and nor freedom of the press in the country.
Nabiullah Nabi said, I personally arranged food for poor people for three months during corona pandemic. The assistance on behalf of me is still going on, he claimed.
Some leaders and activists of BNP are working as agents of the government. Anti-government movement is being disrupted because of them. I am requesting to remove them from the party. Because we should remember that sea water never decreases, on the other hand, the sea does not deprive anyone. If someone is left out of the party, there will be no loss to the party. Rather, they will correct themselves by sensing their mistakes, he said.
Referring to India, he said that India is a democratic country where the people practise democracy, so their government is formed through elections. India has always been by the side of BNP in Bangladesh, he added.
Nabiullah Nabi, vice-president of Dhaka North unit, hoped that India will be by our side in the future as well.
Nabiullah Nabi, renegade leader of BNP, said this in an interview with Pobnews yesterday.
He said, the government assumed power by killing democracy and illegally holding mock elections. There is no alternative to the opposition in multi-party democratic system, because it can consolidate democracy.
He said, Ziaur Rahman came to power in Bangladesh in 1975 after the death of Sheikh Mujib. He then first formed the Jagdal and later BNP and introduced multi-party democracy in Bangladesh.
On May 30, 1981, Ziaur Rahman was killed in an army coup at Chittagong Circuit House.
Later, the military ruler Hussein Md. Ershad came to power. Ershad was in power for 9 years. When Begum Khaleda Zia started an anti-Ershad movement, Ershad was forced to resign in December 1990. Democracy returned to Bangladesh in 1991. In the general election, BNP came to power as the single majority party. Since then, the BNP has been in power three times in a row.
Nabiullah said the formation of OIC and SAARC with the aim of establishing brotherhood not enmity with any country created animosity between Ziaur Rahman and other countries.
He said, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is an uncompromising leader. False cases against our leaders and workers by killing democracy have kept a big party like BNP interned through jail and torture.
Fifty cases have been filed against me and numerous cases against the leaders and workers of my area. No one can stay in the area for fear of police, he observed.
Nabiullah said, it is doubtful whether the Awami League government will get 20 seats if free and fair elections are held now. If people’s right to vote is returned, BNP will return to power as a single majority party.
Nabiullah Nabi termed the leaders and workers of Awami League as corrupt. Sheikh Hasina’s sister (Rehana) has vast assets in London, USA, he said, calling for conducting research into it.
About the party’s unity, he said that there is no lack of unity among the grassroots level leaders and workers of BNP.
He lamented that the party (BNP) is still paying compensation for the mistake by not participating in 2014 national election and coming to power by making an alliance with a pro-Pakistani party.
He said BNP has always been against terrorism and militancy. The occupation of the properties of the minorities all over the country, vandalism of idols and the burning of temples have all happened during the Awami League rule, and these are still going on. The BNP believes in peace, he said.
The veteran BNP leader observed that by not allowing three-time successful Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to go abroad for receiving better treatment was the ultimate failure of the Awami League government.
