Tensions are running high between Washington and Beijing over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. After Pelosi left Taiwan, China announced large-scale military exercises starting Thursday in the waters around Taiwan.
Beijing has asked foreign ships and aircraft not to enter the area during military exercises. Taiwan and its surrounding waters are important trade routes in world trade.
Reacting to this, Jake Sullivan said in an interview given to National Public Radio on Wednesday, “We think that what China is doing here is not their responsible behavior.”
“When a military is involved in activities such as missile tests, live-fire exercises, fighter jets flying in the air and ships patrolling the seas, certain things are likely to become reality,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan urged Beijing to reduce tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Sullivan said, “We hope China will behave responsibly and avoid tensions so as not to miscalculate by air and sea.”
After Pelosi left Taiwan on Wednesday night, the territory’s defense ministry said 27 Chinese warplanes entered Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
