Non-Muslims in Malaysia have used the word ‘Allah’ in the past, leading to increased religious tensions and even violence. About two-thirds of the country’s population is Muslim. However, there is also a large Christian community.
The Christian community claims that for hundreds of years they have been using the word ‘Allah’ to mean the Creator, which comes from Arabic into Malay. They claim that past restrictions have violated their right to use the word.
The Malaysian constitution guarantees religious freedom. But recently religious tensions have risen in the country.
In 2006, some CDs were confiscated from a Christian woman named Jill Ireland Lawrence Bill. CDs seized from the airport show that the word ‘Allah’ has been used in the title of their recordings.
