POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 2 2022 : Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirn Sharmin Chawudhury paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle at the Speaker’s office in Westminster Building, London. According to Press Release.
On the occasion of her visit on Monday, the British flag was hoisted on the Westminster premises alongside the Bangladeshi flag.
During the meeting, they discussed about the role of Commonwealth parliaments, including climate change, poverty alleviation, women’s empowerment, Rohingya issue, Bangladeshi diaspora and social development.
Shirin Sharmin said, Westminster and Commonwealth parliaments can work together to ensure social development including addressing climate change issues, poverty alleviation, and women’s empowerment.
She said that during her tenure as the Chairperson of the CPA, she has contributed to increasing mutual cooperation by coordinating with the Commonwealth Parliaments and other parliamentary bodies including the IPU.
The Speaker recalled with gratitude the cooperation and support of the British Parliament in this regard.
She said, the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), a conference of the Commonwealth of Nations, could be used to discuss existing and emerging issues with parliaments in addition to discussions at the government level.
At present, various organizations of the world including the United Nations, World Bank, IMF are exchanging views with the parliaments on various issues. The Commonwealth may also follow suit, she added.
The speaker said that Bangladesh is one of the countries that are most likely to be affected by the adverse effects of climate change. However, Bangladesh is facing the crisis successfully due to timely initiatives taken by the government.
Along with Five Year Plan, Bangladesh has adopted long term Perspective Plan and Delta Plan. In these cases, she highlighted the visionary action plan formulation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she observed.
British Speaker Hoyle praised the steps and initiatives taken by Bangladesh on climate change, saying that the Bangladeshi diaspora is working in Britain with great appreciation.
British Bangladeshis are contributing to the development of Britain with devotion in the local government system, including the British Parliament. At the same time, they are also playing a role in the development of Bangladesh.
The Bangladeshi Speaker sought Britain’s continued support in solving the Rohingya problem. She invited the British Speaker to the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh Parliament.
Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle accepted the invitation and expressed his hope to be present at the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Saida Muna Tasnim, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Britain, and Joint Secretary MA Kamal Billah were present during the meeting.
