POBNEWS24, Dhaka, May 10, 2022 : Bangladesh is ready to face the strongest cyclone ‘Asani’ of the year in the Andaman Sea due to possible light pressure, said the Minister of State for Disaster Management and Relief. Enamur Rahman.
He was speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Secretariat on Thursday (May 5) at noon to prepare for the cyclone.
Cyclone Asani could hit Satkhira district of Bangladesh via Orissa and West Bengal in northeast India, he said. Hopefully, we can deal with it nicely.
He added that he had learned yesterday that a cyclonic system had been developed near the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean. Which may be converted to light pressure within 9 days. Then gradually it will take the form of obvious light pressure. It is expected to change from low pressure to deep depression and cyclone on the 11th. If there is a cyclone, the cyclone will be named asani. Its landfall has not been calculated yet. After the depression and cyclone, I can tell when it will hit the coast of Bangladesh.
The state minister said since Bangladesh is a cyclone prone country. We have a bitter experience, millions of people lost their lives in the storm. For this we have called a preliminary meeting today. We have discussed cyclones here. The meeting discussed when the light pressure and depression will occur.
“We have decided today what our preparation will be at each step and how to guide us,” he said. If a warning is given next time, we will hold an inter-ministerial meeting and send the instructions to the field.
The state minister said that CPP volunteers should be informed, field level officials should be informed and shelter centers should be set up in case of deep depression. “We have about 7,000 shelter houses. If necessary, we will use school-college and other buildings,” he said.
The Minister of State for Disaster Management exchanged Eid greetings with the officials of the ministry.
