POBNEWS24 Dhaka June 19, 2022 : The seventh meeting of the Bangladesh-India Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) is being held in New Delhi on Sunday. The meeting will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jayashankar. Bangladesh will seek resolution of unresolved issues at the meeting.
On the occasion of the meeting, the Foreign Minister arrived in New Delhi on a three-day visit on Saturday.
He will also attend an ‘Interactive Business Meeting’ jointly organized by the Bangladesh High Commission and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi.
The Indian Foreign Ministry said in a press release yesterday that the seventh meeting of the JCC today will discuss various aspects of bilateral relations and bilateral issues, including co-operation in the context of Kavid-19. This is the first meeting after the Cavid-19 epidemic. The previous meeting was held virtually in 2020. This year’s JCC meeting will review the details in terms of Kavid-19.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting will focus on border management, security, trade and investment, communications, energy, water resources, development partnerships and other regional and multilateral issues.
Diplomatic sources say the two countries are discussing the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister to India. There will be initiatives in today’s meeting to make that visit fruitful. Bangladesh is expecting progress, especially in the water resources sector.
Though the JCC meeting was scheduled to be held in New Delhi on May 30, it was postponed. Bangladesh wanted to hold a meeting of the Joint River Commission (JRC) of the two countries before the JCC meeting. But in the end it did not happen.
Asked what issues would be discussed at the JCC meeting, the foreign minister said there were many issues with India. Other unresolved issues include anti-dumping on jute, border issues and new issues of energy security. Regarding the import of wheat from India, the Foreign Minister said that they (India) have agreed to export wheat to Bangladesh.
