POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 6, 2022 : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the people to be by the side of the people with the vow of providing services to the doctors of the country. The Prime Minister said, “It is not just a profession. You serve the people and I want you to be by the side of the people with the vow of service. ‘
Sheikh Hasina made the remarks while addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) at Mohakhali in the capital on Monday morning and as the chief guest of the 14th Convocation 2022.
Sheikh Hasina attended the virtual function from her official residence Ganobhaban.
The Prime Minister said, “I would like to say one thing to our medical staff – when a patient goes to a doctor for treatment, two words from the doctor can in many cases heal the patient or build self-confidence.” So we have to pay special attention to this issue. He said that the patient’s words make the patient half better, that is the reality.
Mentioning the urgent need for research on medical science in our country, the Prime Minister in his speech advised the doctors to concentrate on this issue.
“We desperately need research, and I urge everyone to look into it,” he said.
“Our country has an outbreak of many diseases with the weather, climate and nature,” he said. It is equally important for us to free people from them.
He cited the example of the Father of the Nation who established ICDDR’B to cure cholera which was rampant in the region at that time and turned it into a high quality institution. His government came to run the state and further developed it. As a result, the region is free of cholera outbreaks. Besides, he has taken initiative to protect human health from childhood by vaccinating against various diseases including polio.
Mentioning that the doctors of our country are talented, he said, if the doctors of our country can go abroad and do so well, then why not do it in the country. Emphasizing on the importance of taking such steps so that our doctors can properly develop their talents in the country, the Prime Minister said, “You will get all the support you need for this.”
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malek spoke as the special guest. BCPS also awarded honorary fellowships to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On behalf of the Prime Minister, Zahid Malek accepted the fellowship and memento of the golden jubilee of BCPS. Later, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Zahid Malek handed over the Gold Medal to the BCPS Fellows from 2016 to 2022 and honorary fellowships to eminent personalities from home and abroad.
Former President of BCPS Prof. AHM Touhidul Anwar Chowdhury delivered the welcome address in the presidency of BCPS President Prof. Kazi Deen Mohammad. BCPS Secretary Prof. Dr. introduced the foreign guests who came to the event. Mohammad Billal Alam. Professor Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Senior Vice President of BCPS expressed his gratitude. At the beginning of the program, a documentary on the theme song of BCPS and the activities of BCPS was shown.
He thanked the medical community for standing by the people of Corona and said that was why his government was able to control corona by keeping the death toll within a certain range. He expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and wished them peace of mind.
The Prime Minister said it is a great honor to receive the BCPS Fellowship. This is my call to all the esteemed fellows and members who are present here – you will continue to work for the country and the people of the country by using your acquired knowledge and experience motivated by love of country.
He said, “I can only say that you will get all kinds of assistance from me to ensure the health care of the people.” That’s all I can say to you. He congratulated and thanked the guests from abroad and said, “You are looking after our health system and I think working together can save a lot of new experiences through exchange of views.” Which takes place in the country and the people.
The Prime Minister said that this is our goal and we are trying to ensure that the people of our country will always get treatment of international standard and we will do that.
He said his government has set up three more medical universities in Rajshahi, Chittagong and Sylhet and his government aims to set up one medical university in each department. He also mentioned that the number of medical colleges in government and private sectors has increased significantly. The Prime Minister called for improving the quality of treatment and ensuring patient care.
“You have to look at this issue so that the people of our country can get international standard treatment,” he said. Even though the population of our country is very high, the patient pressure is very high, still I would say the matter needs to be looked into. The Prime Minister also mentioned that his government has a plan to improve the online based specialized medical system with the benefits of Digital Bangladesh.
He said, “We are also creating opportunities for the people to get specialized medical services in their respective upazilas.” He said his government was carrying out awareness activities to keep the people free from disease outbreaks along with food and nutrition security. He also emphasized on proper diagnosis and raising awareness among the people about the disease.
The Prime Minister expressed concern that the number of our non-communicable patients is increasing. And I don’t know why the incidence of cancer and kidney disease has increased lately. There is a need to create awareness and impart knowledge among the people about staying free from these diseases. I will create a hospital based on this subject in every department to bring this service to the doorsteps of the people as you can do it. And we have already taken steps to provide kidney dialysis and heart disease treatment in the district hospitals.
The head of government said, “In the case of running the state, I can say but I will continue to serve the people of this country with a sense of humanity. Like me, I am giving that service to the people.” “Power is an opportunity for him,” he said, adding that the main goal here was to serve the people. As the Prime Minister, it is not a matter of indulging in luxuries. So wherever you are in the profession, you will be by the side of people with a sense of humanity, that is the most important thing.
