Explosions and fires at the BM Container Depot at Sonaichhari in Sitakunda, Chittagong have directly spread fire, heat and smoke over an area of 2.5 sq km. And it has a far-reaching effect in the area of 10 square kilometers.

The blast took place at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda at 11 pm on Saturday. The blast shook an area of at least four square kilometers around the site. The fire is still burning at the scene. At least 41 people died in the accident. Hundreds of people were injured.
According to fire service sources, the container depot contained a large quantity of chemicals called ‘hydrogen peroxide’. Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound. If it is heated, hydrogen peroxide acts as an explosive in thermal decomposition.
