POBNEWS24 Dhaka June 18, 2022 : The water level of the river Jamuna continues to rise due to the downpour and rains coming down from the upper reaches. Meanwhile, the water level at Kazipur point in Sirajganj has crossed the danger line. And Sirajganj city is flowing at one point below the danger level at Raksha Dam point. As a result, floods are being feared.
Crops of low lying areas are being submerged. Farmers are suffering.
According to Paubo sources, in the last 24 hours till 9 am on Saturday, the water level of Jamuna river has increased by 37 cm at Kazipur point and is flowing at 4 cm above the danger level. In the last 24 hours till 12 noon, the water of Jamuna river has increased by 30 cm in the area at Sirajganj city Raksha Dam point and is flowing only 1 cm below the danger level.
Shafiqul Islam, executive engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said that if the water level of Jamuna river continues to rise like this, there is a danger of flood in low lying areas. However, Paubo is ready to deal with any situation including breakage. And geobags are being dumped in places where erosion has occurred.
Meanwhile, due to rising water level in the river Jamuna, the water level in Chalanbil including Phuljor, Karatoya, Baral, Hurasagar and Ichhamati is rising. The low lying areas and char areas are being flooded. Jute, sesame, kaun, almonds, vegetables and other growing crops are being wasted in these areas. The farmers are facing financial loss.
Haripur Aur Rashid, chairman of Tekani UP in Kazipur, said the arable land and fields in the char area had been submerged. People are in dire straits with cattle. They are terrified of floods.
Ziaul Haque Zia Munshi, chairman of Kawakola UP in Sadar upazila, said the lower lands of the char were flooded. The way the water is rising, the water will rise in the houses in the next 24 hours.
