In this month of 1975, a group of misguided army personnel killed the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members. The day is a tainted chapter in the history of the Bengali nation. The ruling Awami League and allied and fraternal organizations will observe this month of mourning through various programs.
On the night of August 15, 1975, the assassins not only killed Bangabandhu, they wanted to wipe out the legacy of Bangabandhu’s blood. The assassins killed Bangabandhu’s consort Bangmata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Bangabandhu’s children Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal, infant son Sheikh Russell, daughter-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosi Jamal. Two more houses were attacked and killed Bangabandhu’s brother Sheikh Nasser, sister-in-law Abdur Rob Serniabat, nephew youth leader Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, his wife Arju Moni too.
The murder of August 15 stirred up the whole world. After killing Bangabandhu, West German leader Willy Brandit, who won the Nobel Prize, said, ‘After killing Mujib, Bengalis can no longer be trusted. A Bengali who can kill Sheikh Mujib can do any heinous act. ‘
Apart from the brutal killings of 15 August 1975, August has been an eventful month for this country. On August 21, 2004, a large-scale loss of life occurred in a grenade attack targeting party president Sheikh Hasina at an Awami League rally in the capital. On August 17, 2005, militants bombed 63 districts of the country simultaneously.

Awami League’s month-long program
Awami League has announced a month-long program from the first hour of August. This information was announced in a press release signed by Biplab Barua, the office secretary of the party on Sunday.
On the occasion of the beginning of the month of mourning, Awami Swachhasebak League and Chhatra League will hold a light procession towards the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi at 12:01 pm on July 31. At the same time, Mahila Awami League will light candles in memory of martyrs of August 15.
Blood and plasma donation program organized by Krishak League will be held at Bangabandhu Bhavan premises today Monday at 10 am. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be joined virtually as chief guests.
On the occasion of martyr Sheikh Kamal’s birthday on August 5, at 8:30 am, wreath laying ceremony was held at the portrait of freedom fighter Sheikh Kamal at Abahani club premises. 9.15 am Tribute at Banani Cemetery.
On the occasion of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib’s birthday on August 8, tributes were paid at Banani Cemetery at 9 am. Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League will distribute food among the orphans in Bad Johar Azimpur Orphanage. Apart from this, Awami League’s relief and social welfare sub-committee, Awami League’s forest and environment sub-committee, Awami Jubo League and Awami Matsyajeevi League will organize separate discussions.
The National Day of Mourning program on August 15 includes half-masting of national and party flags and hoisting of black flags at sunrise at Bangabandhu Bhavan and party central offices at all levels of the organization across the country. At 7 a.m., wreath-laying ceremony at Bangabandhu’s portrait at the Bangabandhu Bhavan premises of Dhanmondi, the historic memorial of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. At 7:45 AM, Tribute to the Martyrs of 15th August, Grave Ziarat, Fateha Reading, Monajat and Milad Mahfil at Banani Cemetery.
A discussion on National Mourning Day will be held on August 16 at 3:30 pm. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to preside over the meeting.
A discussion meeting organized by Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Awami League at Bangabandhu Avenue Central Office of Awami League at 11 am on the occasion of August 17 serial bombing day across the country.
On the occasion of the hellish grenade attack day on August 21, a tribute was paid at the Awami League central office premises at 23 Bangabandhu Avenue at 9 am. Awami League will organize a meeting to protest the infernal grenade attack on August 21 at 10 am.
Awami League will end the mourning month of August with a discussion organized by Chhatra League and Krishak League on August 31.
