POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 27, 2022 : The Livestock Department has said that there will be no shortage of sacrificial cattle in Chittagong during the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha. However, the Chittagong Dairy Farmers Association (CDFA) says the cattle market here depends on the border situation. Failure to bring cattle to Chittagong from the north and across the border could have adverse effects.
Chittagong District Livestock Officer. Md. Delwar Hossain said eight lakh 21 thousand animals will be sacrificed in 15 upazilas of the metropolis and the district this time.
The number of cattle to be sacrificed to local farms and domestic farmers is about seven lakh 91 thousand 501. To meet the shortage of about 30,000 animals, some seasonal traders will bring animals from different parts of the country to the Chittagong market. They nurtured them for a short time and sold them in the sacrificial market.
According to the concerned sources, the demand for Eid-ul-Adha in Chittagong is five lakh 35 thousand 603 cows, 6 thousand 238 buffaloes, one lakh 79 thousand 72 goats and sheep and 99 other animals. Six lakh 69 thousand 22 animals were produced locally that year. Among the animals reared in 15 upazilas and city police stations of Chittagong, there are 4,602 in Kotwali, 9,018 in double mooring and 16,250 in Panchlaish. District Livestock Officer. Delwar Hossain told Kaler Kantha, “With Eid-ul-Azha in mind, unofficial sale of sacrificial animals has already started in Chittagong. This time the demand for sacrifice will be met with locally produced animals. However, traders have started bringing animals from different parts of the country. And seasonal traders have also raised animals targeting Eid al-Adha. That is why there will be no animal crisis here. ‘ With Eid-ul-Azha in mind, unofficial sale of sacrificial animals has already started in Chittagong. Malik Mohammad Omar, general secretary of the Chittagong Dairy Farmers Association, told Kaler Kanth, “The cattle market in Chittagong on Eid depends on the border situation. There are about one thousand small and big farms in Chittagong region. The livestock raised on these farms and at home is not enough. The maximum number of these cattle will be two lakh. ‘
According to him, more sacrifices were made in Dhaka and Chittagong than in other parts of the country. Therefore, the market in Chittagong depends on cattle from different parts of the country, especially in the north. And 70 percent of the country’s beef demand depends on cattle crossing the border.
Mohammad Omar said, ‘The cost of raising cows has increased a lot this time as compared to last year. Many farms have not increased the number of cows due to rising prices of medicines and animal feed. ‘
However, Omar said that the price of animals will not go up this Eid. If the border situation remains normal, the supply of sacrificial animals will be as expected. And the price will be at a tolerable level. ‘
