POBNEWS24, Dhaka, May 31, 2022 : The 18th Asia Cup Cricket Tournament is taking place in Sri Lanka, putting an end to all speculations. However, there may be some changes in the previous schedule. Three days ahead, Sri Lanka wants to start the Asia Cup from August 24. According to the pre-announced schedule, the Asia Cup was scheduled to start on August 28.
Due to the economic crisis and political instability, there was a possibility of shifting the Asia Cup from Sri Lanka to Bangladesh. Probably not.
Although no official announcement has been made by the Asian Cricket Council, the news has been confirmed by several media outlets, including Pakistan’s GeoTV and The News. A source close to the board told The News that a number of participating parties, including Pakistan, had requested some changes in the schedule to avoid clashes in the international schedule. Pakistan will play seven Twenty20 matches against England at home in late September.
The tournament was supposed to be held on Sri Lankan soil in 2020. But it was postponed because of Corona. Though it was supposed to be organized in 2021, it was canceled. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) then decided to hold the event in Sri Lanka next August.
A total of six teams will take part in the Asia Cup. Hosts Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and a team from the qualifiers. The source further said that it would be an advantage for Pakistan if the Asia Cup starts on August 24 and ends on September 6. Because it will allow them to return to the country at the right time for the T20 series against England.
