POBNEWS24, Dhaka Sept 14, 2024 : Bangladesh has a larger Hindu population. The preliminary report of the 2021 census was released on recently. It admits that the population of Hindus has decreased by 0.59 percent in the last decade. Public distribution experts find this information alarming amid recent anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh.
According to the report, Muslims constitute 91 percent of the population of Bangladesh. 7.95 percent belong to Sanatan religion. Which was 8.54 percent in 2011. That is, the population of Hindus in that country has decreased by 0.59 percent in 10 years.
After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the first census was conducted in 1974. In that year, the percentage of Hindus in Bangladesh was 13.50 percent. During the celebration of 50 years of independence, it was reduced to almost half.
The report cites several reasons behind the decline in the number of Hindus in Bangladesh. These include elopement, and the low fertility rate of Hindu women is also noted.
According to the 2021 census, the population of Bangladesh has increased to 16 crores. The population has increased at the rate of 1.22 percent annually in the country. Population increased to 1,199. However, there has been a significant increase in the rate of signatures. It has increased from 51.77 percent a decade ago to 78.66 percent.
BJP has already raised questions about why the percentage of Hindus in the population of Bangladesh is decreasing. Opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari posted this question on Facebook.
