POBNEWS24, Dhaka, July 26, 2022 : Pope Francis has apologized for abuse of indigenous children at residential schools run by the Catholic Church in Canada. BBC reported that the Pope apologized for the incident when he arrived in Canada.
It is reported that Pope Francis visited Muskawasis in the western province of Alberta on Monday. He visited the former premises of Erminskin Indian Residential School there.
Pope Francis said he was there to offer condolences and ask God for forgiveness.
He also said, ‘I came here. Because the first step on my pilgrimage of repentance is to apologize again, to let you know again that I am deeply sorry. ‘
He also said, ‘What happened in Canada’s Aboriginal schools is not compatible with Christian beliefs. Rather, it was a catastrophic error. I humbly apologize for the evil done by Christians against the natives. ‘
Incidentally, in May of last year, the remains of 215 children were recovered from an old residential school building in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. These children are indigenous Red Indians. In June of that year, another 751 unmarked graves were discovered at an old Aboriginal residential school in Saskatchewan.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called on Pope Francis to apologize for the church’s role in governing schools after nearly 1,000 remains were found in two mass graves. Finally, Pope Francis officially apologized.
