POBNEWS24, Dhaka Dec 15, 2024 : President of Timor-Leste Jose Ramos-Horta today urged Bangladesh business firms to come up with their investment in Timor Timor-Leste.
He came up with the call while speaking at a joint press appearance at Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) here after holding talks with Chief Adviser Dr Professor Muhammad Yunus, followed by a delegation-level meeting.
Stressing the need for boosting economic and trade relations between the two nations, Ramos-Horta said: “I see we can import more from Bangladesh and we invite Bangladeshi companies to come in Timor-Leste as by next year, we will join ASEAN and will be part of a region of 700 million people.”
He said Timor-Leste will join a GDP of over US$ 4 trillion next year.
The Timor-Leste president hoped that Bangladesh would be a partner of developing his country.
Ramos-Horta said Nobel Peace Laureate Prof Yunus is one of the most respected leaders in the world, who is active in office, comparing the Bangladesh chief adviser to the world leaders like Nelson Mandela, John F Kenned, Mahatma Gandhi, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.
“So, Bangladesh is very fortunate, very lucky, to have such an unassuming and humble person leading…he is working with you – the young people – to transform the country,” he said.
Mentioning that both Bangladesh and Timor-Leste have similar history of suffering, the Timor-Leste president said the people of Bangladesh are resilient, hardworking creative and successful.
Terming Prof Yunus his brother, friend and mentor, he thanked the Bangladesh government for hosting him, saying he feels honoured being here.
A special Singapore Airlines flight carrying the Timor-Leste president and his entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) here around 10.40 pm last night.
Chief Adviser Prof Yunus received him amid gun salute and guard of honour.
