POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 5, 2022 : The ambulance is whistling. And one burnt body after another is being unloaded from that ambulance. It’s like a procession of corpses. So far 38 bodies have been added to the procession. Among the dead were five firefighters.
In addition, more than four hundred were injured. They include depot workers, local residents as well as members of the police and fire service.
The tragic incident took place at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda, Chittagong on Saturday night. The body started coming to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital on Sunday morning. The bodies have not been identified yet.
This information has been known from the hospital sources in Chittagong Medical College. The death toll is expected to rise further.
In addition to the fire service, volunteers from the Army, Rover Scouts and Red Crescent are working at the scene. However, the depot fire has not yet been brought under control.
How the fire started is not yet known. In this regard, BM Container Depot Director Mujibur Rahman said that the exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained as many people involved in the management of the depot were injured. However, I think the fire started from the container.
Police, fire service and local sources said the flames spread from one container to another. There was a huge explosion due to the presence of chemicals in a container. The blast shook the area at least four kilometers from the scene. The window glass of a nearby house shattered.
The director of BM Container Depot said that arrangements are being made for the injured to get maximum treatment. We will bear the entire cost of treatment. Those who have suffered casualties in this accident will be given maximum compensation. Besides, the families of all the victims will be taken care of.
