POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Apr 18, 2022 : Russia’s Defense Ministry has released a video of the surviving sailors of the sunken warship Moscow. This is the first time a sailor has been seen on a warship since it sank. A large contingent of sailors is seen taking part in a parade in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov was also present. News from the BBC.
Moscow led the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The loss of the warship is seen as a major blow to Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry said late on Thursday that Moscow had sunk in the rough seas after being damaged by an explosion. Ukraine claims, however, that two Neptune missiles hit the ship.
Russia said at the time that the ship’s sailors were being taken to Sevastopol, Crimea’s main port. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
This is the first time that evidence has been presented that sailors survived a sunken warship. The video shows Admiral Yevemenov and two other officers standing in front of about 100 sailors taking part in the parade. However, it is not clear when the meeting took place.
At the end of the video, Admiral Yevmenov is heard saying that officers and sailors are currently stationed at their Sevastopol base. They will continue to perform their duties in the Navy.
Russia has not reported any casualties in the shipwreck. However, Reuters quoted US officials as saying on condition of anonymity that Washington believed there were casualties.
Ukraine has claimed that the ship’s captain, Anton Kuprin, was killed there. However, the BBC could not verify this claim.
The 12,490-ton Moscow is the largest warship to have sunk since World War II. Russia also deployed missile cruisers during the war in Syria. The Moscow of 510 sailors is considered a symbol of the strength of the Russian military. The warship was leading the Russian navy to attack Ukraine.
Moscow was commissioned in 1973. The warship is equipped with 16 Bhulkan cruise missiles capable of striking at a distance of 600 km. It also has submarine-destroying and mine-torpedo weapons. Russia lost the second largest warship in the Ukraine war.
