POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Dec 15, 2021 : The killing of intellectuals is a scandalous chapter in the history of our independence, said the President. Abdul Hamid.
He said that intellectuals are the embodiment of development and progress of the country and the nation. Their innovative ability, creative activities, liberal and democratic thinking are conducive to national progress. The intellectuals who are known as the conscience of the nation, through their sharp writings, have made an outstanding contribution to advance the great liberation war on the path of success by creating public opinion in favor of the liberation war, giving advice to the wartime Mujibnagar government and intellectual consciousness.
The President said this in a message on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day on Tuesday (December 14).
Abdul Hamid said, today is December 14, the day of martyred intellectuals. On this day, I remember with deep respect the martyred intellectuals who were ruthlessly martyred at the hands of the Pak aggressors and their local allies on the eve of the 1971 victory. I pray for the forgiveness and peace of their departed souls and extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
The President said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation, the great architect of independence and the father of the nation, prepared the Bengali nation for the liberation struggle through step-by-step struggle. After many ups and downs, he declared independence on March 26, 1971. At his call the whole nation jumped into the liberation struggle. The long nine-month armed liberation war brought about the ultimate victory. The Pakistani aggressors, in anticipation of their sure defeat, conspired to make the nation incompetent. For this purpose, in collaboration with the anti-independence Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams forces, on 14 December 1971, the country’s renowned academics, doctors, writers, journalists and artists were brutally killed. The nation loses its best children. This is a scandalous chapter in the history of our independence.
Abdul Hamid further said that intellectuals were selectively killed throughout the liberation war starting from the night of March 25. However, on the eve of the victory, this massacre took a terrible form. The brutal assassination of the country’s famous intellectuals was an irreparable loss to the nation. The Bengali nation still mourns the loss of its sun children. Their sacrifice will be successful only if they can build a happy and prosperous golden Bengal based on the spirit of liberation war by following the ideology and path left by the martyred intellectuals.
