POBNEWS24, Desk Report, Feb 7, 2022 : Prices were falling in the market due to increasing supply of onions in the busy season. Prices in the wholesale market also fell below the cost of production. However, due to unseasonal rains, the price of onion has suddenly gone up. Onions were sold at an additional price of Tk 9 to 10 per kg in the wholesale market on Sunday.

This has also affected some retail markets.

Traders say many onion fields have been destroyed in the last few days of rains. Supply has been disrupted, and prices have risen. They think that if the supply is normal, the price may go down again. However, buyers claim that the onions sold yesterday were already bought by traders. So raising the price is unreasonable.

Market analysis shows that till last Friday, domestic (murikata) onions were sold at a wholesale price of Tk 22 to 23 per kg in Shyambazar and Karwan markets of the capital. Last Saturday the price came down to 19 to 20 rupees.

Yesterday, the price suddenly increased from 26 to 30 rupees. In other words, the price has increased from 9 to 10 rupees per kg in one day. Besides, imported onions have been sold at a wholesale price of Tk 45 per kg, which was earlier Tk 35 to 40.

When asked, Selim Mallick, a trader at Laksam Traders, an onion warehouse in Karwan Bazar, told Kaler Kanth that the price of onion has come down to the bottom. But yesterday it suddenly increased.

Abdur Razzak, a trader at Raj Traders, a warehouse in Shyambazar, said onions cannot be stored for long. In a few days of rain, many onions have rotted in the fields. Dealers have taken the policy of selling onions slowly, thinking that it will be too late for new onions to arrive. The price has also increased a bit.

However, this increase in the wholesale market yesterday has affected many retail markets. In the markets where onions were sold at Tk 30 per kg the day before, the buyers had to buy at Tk 40 per kg yesterday. In many markets, onions are being sold at earlier prices. In the raw market adjacent to Bashundhara Gate, local onion was sold at the previous price of Tk 35 yesterday. Imported onions have been sold in the market at 50 rupees.

According to the Department of Agricultural Marketing, the production cost of onion in the country is around Rs. Even if the farmer sells 25 rupees along with other expenses, there is profit. Farmers have been selling onions for so many days at a loss.

Healy: Due to two days of continuous rain, the price of domestic onion has also increased in Healy. Six rupees per kg has increased in two days. Traders said that the price has gone up due to low supply of onion in the market. Healy wholesale and retail markets were visited yesterday morning, at present onions are being sold in the retail market at the price of 26 rupees per kg, which was 22 rupees two days ago. In other words, it has increased by six rupees per kg.

Shakil Hossain, a seller in Hili Bazar, said, “There is no Indian onion in the market, we are doing business with local onion. Due to the rain, the supply of onions in our warehouses has been reduced for two days. ‘
