POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 18, 2022 : The US has announced it will begin formal trade talks with Taiwan, just weeks after a controversial visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The US Trade Representative’s office said the first round of talks is expected to begin this coming ‘early fall’. The talks will discuss trade facilitation, digital trade and anti-corruption standards.
Relations between the US and China have been strained since Pelosi’s visit.
The US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade was first launched in June. Both sides said they had reached a consensus on the ‘phase of talks’.
US Deputy Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi said in a statement, ‘We plan to pursue an ambitious agenda…that will help build a fairer, more prosperous and resilient economy for the 21st century. ‘
