POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 20, 2022 : The water level of Jamuna river continues to rise in Sirajganj. New areas are being flooded every day. Hundreds of families have been flooded. These areas are facing various problems including pure water crisis and sanitation.

People have started taking shelter in dams and high places.

Hundreds of families living in Ranigram of Sirajganj municipal area as well as Khoksabari Natunpara, Karigarpara, Gunergati, Puthiabari and Char Malsapara living inside the dam, Biara and Saidabad areas of Kalia Haripur Union of Sadar Upazila have been flooded. These people have started taking shelter in the high places around the dam.

Hasanur Rahman, water gauge of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said that Sirajganj Shaharraksha Dam has been flowing over 35 cm in Hardpoint area and 40 cm in Kazipur Point since 9 am today. Due to heavy rains, the water level is expected to rise till June 22.

Meanwhile, the water levels of inland rivers like Phuljor, Ichhamati, Karatoya and Baral are also increasing. As a result, the crop of cultivable land is sinking. The suffering of the waterlogged people of these areas has increased. Besides, river erosion continues in Chowhali and Shahjadpur upazilas of the district. The victims are living inhumane lives.

Shafiqul Islam, executive engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said there was no panic even if the water level in the river rose. Various steps have been taken to protect the river bank dams. Work is underway in the affected areas.
