POBNEWS24 Dhaka June 19, 2022 : The Flood Forecast and Warning Center has warned that the flood situation in Bangladesh could worsen due to continuous rains in Meghalaya and Assam, India. Several districts including Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Rangpur and Kurigram have been inundated by the floods. At least 16 more districts in the northern and central parts of the country are expected to be inundated by Sunday.

Meanwhile, it has rained in eight parts of the country in the last 24 hours.

The rains are expected to continue till next Tuesday, the Meteorological Department said. This information was given by the Meteorological Department on Saturday evening.

Meteorologist said. Bazlur Rashid told Kaler Kanth that most parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusts on Sunday. At the same time day and night temperatures across the country may remain almost unchanged. In addition, the rains may continue for the next two days (until Tuesday). The meteorologist said that the rainfall may decrease after that.

Bangladesh’s flood forecasting center says at least 16 more districts in the northern and central parts of the country could be flooded by Sunday. Floods are intensifying in these areas, and river levels are rising. At the same time, the flood situation in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may deteriorate further. Water levels in 95 rivers across the country have risen.

Pritam Kumar Sarkar, Assistant Engineer, Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, told Kaler Kanth yesterday evening that it would rain for two more days in Sylhet and Sunamganj areas. It is feared that the flood waters will increase in those areas. At the same time, the water of Jamuna river has also started rising. As a result, some more northern districts may be flooded. Some districts in the central region are also likely to be inundated if the floodwaters recede.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, floodwaters are entering India through Kurigram, Sylhet and Sunamganj districts as the rains continue. As a result, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sherpur, Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Tangail, Manikganj, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Pabna may be flooded. Besides, floods are feared in Netrokona, Kishoreganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar. Several districts, including Rajbari, Faridpur and Shariatpur, are at risk of flooding if the floodwaters recede further.

According to the Flood Warning Center, the Surma River in Sylhet, Kanaighat, Sunamganj and Dirai, Dharla in Kurigram, Brahmaputra in Chilmari, Jadukata in Lorergarh, Someshwari River in Kalmakanda and Vhogai in Nakuagaon are flowing over the danger line. The water of Teesta river is also rising.

Mohammad Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, said Cherrapunji in India had received about 2,500 mm of rain in the last three days. There will be more rain here. Meghalaya and Assam in India are likely to receive heavy rains for two more days. Rainwater from these areas will come down through Sylhet and Kurigram in Bangladesh.
