POBNEWS24.Net, Dhaka, Mar 8, 2021:On March 7, 1857, women garment workers in a New York City garment factory staged a movement demanding fair wages and labor. The main aim of the movement was to demand equal pay for men and 8 hours of daily labor. This movement tortured and detained by police.
On the same day in 1908, the women of the New York: Garment Workers’ Union staged another protest. The protest lasted for 14 days and was attended by about 20,000 women workers. They started this movement demanding to stop extra labor and child labor in the workplace. This movement in the workplace is a great example of the unity of women.
∎ At the Second International Socialist Conference in 1910, the German sociologist Clara Jetkin demanded the declaration of women’s suffrage and a Women’s Day.
∎ In Russia in 1913, women celebrated the last Sunday of February as Women’s Day.
In 1986, the United Nations declared March 8 as International Women’s Day.
The Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women is known as ‘CIDO’. It was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 1979. It came into force in 1981 with the support of 20 countries. A total of 132 countries, including Bangladesh, currently support the charter. The special feature of this charter is that it is a complete document of women’s rights. It integrates various issues adopted at different times to address discrimination against women.
This charter ensures the responsibility of the state towards women. There are 30 sections in the CDO Charter. The first 16 sections analyze the extent of discrimination against women. And the next 14 sections explain how these inequalities can be eliminated.
The United Nations General Assembly declared November 25, 1999 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Prevention of Violence against Women is celebrated all over the world from November 25 to December 10. The United Nations has declared March 8 as International Women’s Day.
