In the wake of the rise in coronavirus infections, the Bangladesh government and various aid agencies have started vaccinating people in Rohingya refugee camps since Tuesday. More than one million people have fled Myanmar and taken refuge in these camps in Cox’s Bazar Bangladesh with various health risks.
Delta variants of highly contagious corona are spreading rapidly across Bangladesh. In Cox’s Bazar, a border district of Myanmar where there are 34 refugee camps, 200 people have already died in Corona and 20,000 have been infected.
The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Society say the concentration of corona in the region is 30 percent higher due to the high density of people in the refugee camps.
In addition to Bangladesh’s national vaccination program, the government’s Cox’s Bazar Civil Surgeon’s Office and various aid agencies working there have started vaccination in 34 refugee camps.
Bangladesh Red Crescent’s 500 staff and volunteers are working with UN refugee agency health workers on vaccination activities.
Leading Rohingya individuals, frontline health care volunteers and people over the age of 55 are being vaccinated earlier. In the first phase, 75,000 of the 900,000 Rohingya will be vaccinated, According to UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Coronavirus has already infected 1.3 million people in Bangladesh. 22 thousand 798 people died.
