POBNEWS24, Desk Report, Feb 7, 2022 : Attempts have been made to capture the polling station in Khagraia, Satkania, with gunfire and clashes between supporters of the two candidates. There were also shootings during this time. However, no information has been received about whether anyone was injured. Shortly after the incident, polling at Khagaria Multipurpose High School and Union Parishad was declared closed.
The incident took place at Ganipara Government Primary School in Khagaria Union of the upazila around 10am on Monday. Satkania Upazila Election Officer Abu Taleb Mandal said polling was temporarily suspended due to the clash.
It is known that the independent chairman candidate. Awami League nominated chairman candidate with supporters of Jasim Uddin. Akhtar Hossain’s supporters were chased back. At one stage, both sides exchanged fire to occupy the center. Police also fired a few rounds to bring the situation under control.
Upon receiving the news, Chittagong District Superintendent of Police Rashidul Haque and Chittagong District Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Sujan Chandra Sarkar went to the spot. Later, the administration decided to stop voting in these two centers. At that time, the Election Commission decided to withdraw the election equipment including the ballot box.
Umar Farooq, executive magistrate in charge of Khagaria, said: Satkania Police Station OC Muhammad Abdul Jalil said
there was trouble between the two parties at the polling station. There were also incidents of throwing brickbats. Police are working to control the situation.
