POBNEWS24, Dhaka June 29, 2022 : To keep the capital free from traffic congestion, 13.50 km underground metro rail and 6.50 km fly metro rail will be constructed under Metro Rail Line-5 project. The total cost under this project will be 41 thousand 236 crore. Bangladesh has signed a loan agreement worth Tk 11,400 crore with Japan to implement the project. An exchange note loan agreement was signed between the Bangladesh government and Japan on Tuesday for the ongoing metro rail construction project.

The agreement was signed between Fatima Yasmin, secretary of the Economic Relations Department (ERD) and ITO Naoki, Japan’s ambassador to Bangladesh. Yuho Hayakawa, chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), signed the loan agreement on behalf of his country.

Dhaka Month Rapid Transit Development Project (Line-5) Northern Route Project Director. Aftab Hossain Khan told the media that a loan agreement has been signed between the governments of Bangladesh and Japan under the project. The amount in Bangladeshi currency is 11,400 crore. Under the project, 20 km metro rail will be constructed. Of this, 13.50 km will be subway. The signing ceremony of the loan agreement is completed virtually.

The alignment of this new metro rail is: Hemayetpur-Boliarpur-Madhumati-Aminbazar-Gabtali-Darussalam-Mirpur 1-Mirpur 10-Mirpur 14-Kachukshet-Banani-Gulshan 2-From Natunbazar to Bhatara. Out of the total cost of the project, JICA will provide Tk 30,858.46 crore. The project will be completed from July 2019 to December 2028.

At a press conference on June 16 last year, Dhaka Month Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Managing Director (MD) MA N Siddique said that plans have been made to start passenger transport in the subway in 2026. The first subway will be constructed in Dhaka through MRT-1 project under 12 packages. In the first package, depot land development and ancillary infrastructure will be constructed. Tenders have been called for this.

He added that this railway line will have two parts. The first part is completely underground. Underground section will be constructed from Dhaka Airport Railway Station to Kamalapur Railway Station with a length of 19.6 km. The flyover from Kamalapur to Purbachal will be 11.36 km long.
