POBNEWS24, Desk report Dhaka July 9, 2025 : The water level of the Gomti river in Comilla has suddenly risen due to two days of continuous rain. Meanwhile, continuous rain has created a flood situation in the Indian state of Tripura and a red alert has been issued in some places. This has created panic among the residents of both banks of the Gomti river in Comilla.

Meanwhile, people living in the Gomti char are being evacuated to safer places due to the increase in water. Many are moving on their own. Last year, hundreds of villages on the banks of the Gomti suddenly collapsed due to such continuous rain and upstream water. Lakhs of people suffered huge losses.

However, the water level of the river is still 2.8 meters below the danger level, according to the Water Development Board.
Executive Engineer of the Comilla Water Development Board Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman confirmed this information and said, “There has been heavy rainfall without any forecast. There was no such amount of rain in Comilla. Due to heavy rainfall upstream, that is, in the Indian part, the water level of the Gomti river has increased by 4 to 5 meters in the last 24 hours. It takes about 18 hours for the upstream water to reach us here. The latest situation of the Gomti water will be clear by the afternoon.’
On Wednesday, at 3 pm, it was seen that the char area of the Gomti river, Chanpur Bridge and Sangraish area were submerged in water in some places. Various tourist centers known as mini Cox’s Bazar near the banks of the Gomti were submerged in some places.
On the spot, it was also seen that the residents of the Gomti char area were coming up to the embankment with necessary things. They are taking shelter in safe places on their own initiative.
Arif Hossain, a resident of the char area of Jagannathpur area, said, ‘I woke up in the morning and saw that the water had almost reached the house. We are very scared. Last year, our house was washed away in the flood. The people of the area together gave us new houses. If the house is washed away again, then we will have to stay on the road.’
Parvez Alam of the Tikka Char area said, ‘Yesterday afternoon there was not so much water. When I woke up in the morning, I saw that the water had increased a lot. If it continues to rise like this, the water level may rise above the danger level by this afternoon.’
Burichang Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanvir Ahmed has asked everyone to be alert in the current situation. He said, ‘The water level in Gomti is still 9 feet below the danger level. There is no reason to panic. However, everyone should be alert. The situation will not get worse if there is no heavy rain and water from upstream.’
The UNO also said, ‘Arrangements have been made to evacuate people living in Gomti’s char to a safe place. The administration is fully prepared to deal with the disaster. We did not realize earlier that the water level would suddenly rise like this. We are visiting the banks of Gomti on the spot.’
District Meteorological Officer Syed Arifur Rahman said that such rain is happening due to the influence of monsoon. It may continue for another 36 to 48 hours. He advised everyone to be alert.
