POBNEWS24, Dhaka July 30, 2025 : The interim Yunus government’s term of office is over, said economist and CPD Honorary Fellow Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya. He has now suggested determining an ‘exit policy’.
He made this suggestion at a seminar organized by ‘Democracy Days Bangladesh’ at a hotel in Gulshan, the capital, on Wednesday (July 30).
Dr. Debapriya said, ‘We need to think now about how much legitimacy the next government will give to the interim government’s steps. Especially, complete transparency is needed regarding the reforms that have been undertaken. Now is the time to make a clear announcement of the exit policy and achievements.’
Regarding the reform activities, he said, ‘Reform is an ongoing process. A balanced reform policy that is neither more nor less than necessary is acceptable. Otherwise, we will return to the process of un-reform again.’
Regarding the transfer of power, he further said, ‘When a political force fails to transfer power smoothly, extreme weakness arises in the state system. That is when the need for urgent intervention arises, which can sometimes give rise to undesirable situations.’
Debopriyo Bhattacharya said, Bangladesh’s history is full of interim governments or caretaker governments due to weak political situations, economic chaos or weakness of state institutions and lack of an independent election commission. History says that such a fragile situation in the state system arose towards the end of Ershad Saheb, we saw it up close through participating in the mass uprising of the ’90s.
Journalist and political analyst Masud Kamal said, this government is trying to delay the elections in the name of reforms. He thinks the elections should be held in October. He said, although the PR method is good, it is not timely now.
The meeting was also attended by prominent citizens, researchers, and political analysts. The speakers discussed the responsibilities and limitations of the interim government in good governance, democracy, and policymaking.
