POBNEWS24, Dhaka, Aug 21, 2025 : The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has demanded the arrest of the attackers of teacher Shyamal Kanti Dey in Patia upazila of Chittagong within 24 hours. The party leaders said that teachers have been continuously attacked for the past one year after the coup, but the government and administration have not taken any steps to protect them. As a result, teachers across the country are now suffering from extreme insecurity.
On Thursday evening, Chittagong District CPB President Ashok Saha and General Secretary Mohammad Jahangir and South President Kanai Das and General Secretary Shawkat Ali made this demand in a joint statement.
Earlier, on Thursday morning, a group of terrorists beat up Shyamal Kanti Dey, the headmaster of Haidgaon High School in Patia, by forcing him out of an autorickshaw while he was on his way to work. His right eye was severely damaged. The teacher claims that the terrorists attacked him due to a dispute over the appointment of the school’s board president.
In a statement sent to the media, CPB leaders strongly condemned and protested the attack, saying, “Shyamol Kanti Dey is not only performing his duties as a headmaster, he is a well-known teacher leader in Chittagong and an organizer of various social movements. We demand that the police and the administration identify and arrest those involved in this incident within 24 hours.”
Demanding effective steps for the safety of teachers, they said, “In the context of the fall of the authoritarian Awami League government in the mass uprising, we have been witnessing various incidents of torture and abuse including humiliation, harassment, attacks by mob terrorists, forced resignation, dismissal, and mental torture of school, college, and university teachers in different parts of the country for the past one year. The interim government has not been able to play any role against these atrocities on teachers. Rather, the terrorists have been given a reprieve due to the silence of the government and the administration. As a result, teachers continue to be harassed with various political tags or by making them the target of various disputes related to educational institutions. They also said, “As a result, a teacher leader like Shyamal Kanti Dey has had to be attacked by terrorists in this way. All teachers in the country are suffering from extreme insecurity today. We demand that the government immediately take effective steps to stop unjust attacks and torture, harassment and harassment of citizens of all classes and professions of the country, including teachers, and normalize the law and order situation.”
