POBNEWS24, Dhaka Sept 4, 2025 : The press secretary to the chief advisor, Shafiqul Alam, said that if a formal charge sheet is filed against a person for crimes against humanity, he will not be able to participate in the elections.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the chief advisor to the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Thursday (September 4). The press secretary made this known at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy later.
He said that a new section has been added to the International Crimes Tribunal Act. According to the newly added section, if a formal charge is filed against a person, he will be ineligible to contest elections.
The press secretary further said that similarly, that person will be ineligible to be elected or remain as a member of a local government council or institution, commissioner chairman, mayor or administrator. In addition, he will be ineligible to be appointed to the service of the republic or to hold any other public office.
In addition, the meeting approved the ‘Private Participation Renewable Energy Commercial Power Generation Policy, 2025’.
The Advisory Council meeting approved the ‘Telecommunication Network and Licensing Policy 2025’. Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, gave details to journalists at the beginning of the press conference.
The Special Assistant said that as a result of this new policy, a new licensing system has been introduced instead of the oppression of middlemen in the existing licensing system; a long-term plan has been initiated to ensure quality services in the country’s telecommunications sector and expand competitive telecommunications business, bringing voice calls and data, that is, internet and data, within the purchasing power of the common people.
